Ukraine holidays
The Ukraine is the second largest country by area in Europe after Russia. Whereas much of the population in the east of the country feels a political affinity to Russia, the West of Ukraine strives more towards Europe and the EU. Today, the Ukraine is one of the poorest countries in Europe, but Crimean champagne and caviar are luxury goods for which the country was already famous in Soviet times.
Attractions in the Ukraine include the capital Kiev and Odessa. Kiev is one of the oldest cities in Europe. In the 8th Century, it was turned into a major trade centre by the Vikings. The Kievan Rus expanded and flourished, becoming one of the most important cities between Byzantium and Scandinavia until the invasion of the Mongols.
Odessa is much younger but also important due to its strategic location on the Black Sea coast. The city is the link between Occident and Orient. There are also numerous beaches with a large variety of cafés and restaurants.
