Greece holidays

Greece is regarded as the cradle of Western civilization and the Latin alphabet was actually developed from Greek. Greece is the symbol of the ancient world. Philosophy, art and democracy were largely determined and spread by Greek scholars. A well-known Greek myth also gave the European continent its name. According to legend, Zeus, in the shape of a bull, kidnapped the young Europa from Phoenicia. When the girl was mourning on a strange beach in Crete, Aphrodite announced that the continent where the girl found herself would carry the name Europe.

All over Greece and its many islands there are pillars, temples and monuments bearing testimony to Greece's history. The acoustic power of Greece's ancient amphitheatres is legendary. Today they are yet again being used for theatre, for example the Epidaurus amphitheatre, which is especially famous for its excellent acoustics.

However, along with its historically fascinating mainland, Greece also boasts of a vast number of islands and beautiful beaches, which are extremely popular with holidaymakers who flock to the famous beach resorts of Corfu, Crete and Rhodes. Ferries connect the islands and travellers can watch dolphins swim in their wake. On the islands, the clean whitewashed houses in the villages contrast with the deep blue skies in the midday sun, while tourists bask on the beach, wander the streets or relax in one of the many cafés.
