The biggest attraction in Bangkok must be the city itself. It seems almost impossible to enjoy even a moment of silence in a city of such size, yet due to the many temples in Bangkok, there is enough opportunity to retreat.

The most magnificent temple in the city, for example, the "Wat Pho" is a welcome retreat for tourists and locals alike when escaping the hustle and bustle on the streets of Bangkok. Located near the Royal Palace district, Wat Pho temple is the most important religious centre of Bangkok and is famous for its lying gold leaf covered statue of Buddha.

Taking a boat tour along the canals of the “Venice of the east” is also recommended during a trip to the city.

Those wishing to recover from the far eastern culture shock for a moment can head for the many western style shops and luxury hotels on "Siam Square". The Rembrandt Hotel, and the Bayan Tree Hotel are both excellent addresses. There are also plenty of cheap hostels and more expensive hotels in Bangkok: backpackers tend to head for the Khao San Road, well known for its wide choice of cheap hostels or guesthouses. More upmarket choices are The Oriental or the Bangkok Hotel Lotus Sukhumvit.

Bangkok is a lively city even at night. The night market with its tightly packed stalls is a great attraction for tourists looking to buy cheap pirate goods before venturing into the slightly different Bangkok nightlife.
